Slum dwellers are vulnerable to the effects of disease, poverty and despair. The land they live on doesn’t belong to them, and they live in constant fear of eviction. Alcoholism, drug problems and domestic violence are common.

Slum inhabitants don’t own their homes, so they have no motivation to improve their surroundings. They are unwilling to take responsibility for community amenities such as water taps (if the slum has a water supply at all) so any shared facilities are often in disrepair. Corruption by politicians, the police, slumlords and others adds to the slum .

Children are also very active once they develop confidence. We educate them on child rights, the importance of education, and gender equality. They work well in groups, organizing sanitation drives, encouraging parents to send their children to school, running errands for elderly slum residents and urging people to seek healthcare when necessary. Slum residents of all ages are more aware of important issues thanks to the focused efforts, and the number of referring group members is growing all the time.

Most slum children go to schools where teaching standards are low and classrooms are seriously under-equipped. Often, they tell us that their classrooms may have a computer in them, but they are never allowed to touch it. Children are taught in Hindi, with English lessons perhaps once or twice a week – never often enough to gain the standard of English that could lead to good job opportunities. For older children, vital textbooks are absent, and their parents can’t afford to buy them.

No amount of excellent exam results or enthusiasm can help children whose parents are unable to pay for their college education. Asha focuses on providing individual support and counselling to students during their final years of high school, persuading parents of the value of this opportunity, and guiding students through the entire college admission process.

Education is both the means as well as the end to a better life: the means because it empowers an individual to earn his/her livelihood and the end because it increases one's awareness on a range of issues – from healthcare to appropriate social behaviour to understanding one's rights – and in the process help him/her evolve as a better citizen.

Doubtless, education is the most powerful catalyst for social transformation. But child education cannot be done in isolation. A child will go to school only if the family, particularly the mother, is assured of healthcare and empowered. Moreover, when an elder sibling is relevantly skilled to be employable and begins earning, the journey of empowerment continues beyond the present generation.
